The main reason why we want to wear headphones when recording is that the sound that our sound card will not be exactly the same as the one we listen to through our ears. Acoustic optimization for a podcast studio<\/span><\/h2>\n

Acoustic treatment<\/span><\/h3>\n

The ideal acoustic treatment for a podcast studio seeks to <\/span>control the reflections of sound and <\/b>reduce reverberation<\/b><\/a> to achieve a clear, smooth and professional recording.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most common solution, which we can see in practically every podcast studio with good <\/span>acoustic foam panel<\/span>s<\/span><\/a>, mineral fiber or polyester fiber. The setup of these panels aims to avoid having the voice bounce back from the walls towards us, so they are placed behind the microphone\/s, on the ceiling and on the lateral walls at head level.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This happens, for example, with wooden or tile floors, although the solution to this is not in its source but on the ceiling, given that we can place materials there that absorb the sonic waves, thus preventing it from ever coming down.<\/span><\/p>\n

If we want to go a bit further than that, we enter the territory of intermediate level acoustic treatment which will improve the results, but require a larger investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to improve the clarity of the voice or the musical instruments that are going to be played in the room, the best course of action is to place bass traps in the corners of the room that absorb part of the energy that the voice projects in a closed space.<\/span><\/p>\n

If, on the other hand, our aim is to disperse the sound waves, <\/span>we will place diffusers in the wall behind the microphone<\/span><\/a>. The effect this has on the acoustics of the room is that it makes it sound less \u201cartificial\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

All these recommendations apply to measures that we can take on our own, but there are architectural elements that will also have an effect on the acoustics of the space. Ideally, a podcast studio is medium-sized (8\u201320 m\u00b2), its walls are not exactly parallel (this avoids sonic reflections) nor completely flat, with furniture that also have irregular silhouettes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Noise reduction<\/span><\/h3>\n

Not one bit less important than the<\/span> acoustic treatment <\/span><\/a>within the studio for the sounds inside of it is the soundproofing that prevents external sounds from making its way inside it and give us a bigger workload in the editing section.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most effective measures to avoid noise filtering should be built within the studio itself. If it is a room that faces the street or with a lot of noise around it, it should have a double-glazing. Nevertheless, nothing works better than the \u2018box in a box\u2019 treatment, which has the best results.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other actions we can successfully complete by ourselves include placing weather strips on doors and windows, adding a shock mount to the microphone that will minimize any unwanted impacts, placing rubber or acoustic foam mats under the electronic devices or, if we are able to, use a cardioid microphone that ignores the ambience sound, besides putting our mouths closer to them while speaking, leaving between 5 and 10 cm of distance between us and the mic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tips to improve the quality of your podcast<\/span><\/h2>\n

Keeping in mind all the recommendations we have already mentioned, it is now time to ponder about which ones are necessary for the space you plan on using. If you are already satisfied with the acoustics of the room, the next logical step is to set up your equipment in the best possible way and make sure that no external sounds ruin the acoustics that you have already achieved and you like.<\/span><\/p>\n

If, on the contrary, you think the room needs isolation, that should be your priority because it precedes all the treatment of the studio and then you can think about what equipment to use and how to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Something else you can do is take good care of your setup and avoid habits that may have a negative effect on its maintenance. An example as crucial as it is mundane is that power supply lines and the microphones\u2019 XLRs get entangled and create interferences or static noises that make their way into the recorded audio.<\/span><\/p>\n
