If you read about the mass law, you\u2019ll see that every time we double the mass of a wall, we manage to increase the overall sound insulation by 6 dB. To reach 20 dB of insulation, we\u2019d need to increase the wall\u2019s mass to 10 times its original value, which clearly indicates that we must opt for a solution involving two independent walls\u2014combining an increase in mass with elasticity and absorption in the air gap. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the <strong>insulating materials<\/strong> we will discuss in this post to help you achieve your goals with a proper installation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4c226e0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default gs-locked-section-no\" data-id=\"4c226e0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-585e9f5\" data-id=\"585e9f5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48dc11b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48dc11b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Types of soundproofing materials<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will list 5 materials that should be used in any type of acoustic insulation, in order starting from the wall to be insulated, with a sixth material that can be added, plus three additional types of acoustic insulation materials for more demanding projects.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b>Mineral Wool 1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Low density (25 to 35 kg\/m\u00b3, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isover.es\/documents\/fichas-tecnicas\/ft-arena-apta-es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arena Apta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or similar) with a thickness of 4 cm in the air gap we will leave between the existing wall and the new one.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Load-Bearing Structure for Dry Partitioning: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our case, we use structures of 50 mm, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.placo.es\/documents\/fichas-tecnicas\/ft-placo-montante-70-es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 mm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.placo.es\/documents\/fichas-tecnicas\/ft-placo-montante-90-es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 mm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depending on the goal and the wall height. Alternatively, you can use wooden battens of 50 x 50 mm or 50 x 70 mm if you have more economical access to this material.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Mineral Wool 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installed within the aforementioned load-bearing structure, this one has a higher density\u2014around 70 kg\/m\u00b3, such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockwool.com\/siteassets\/rw-es\/herramientas\/fichas-tecnicas\/edificacion-tecnica\/ft_alpharock-premium_es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alpharock E225 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or similar. If we use a 70 mm structure, we install this mineral wool at 60 mm thick; if the structure is 50 mm, then this mineral wool should be 40 mm thick.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Gypsum Plasterboards: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use two to three layers, depending on your objectives. The first layer can be replaced by as dense a wood as possible (for example, DMF) if you want to combine different types of materials, though it is recommended that the last layer is always gypsum plasterboard so that the joints can be perfectly sealed with tape and joint compound. The thicker each layer is, the better the insulation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b><\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We use three layers of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.placo.es\/documents\/fichas-tecnicas\/ft-placo-pph-15-1200-es.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 mm Placo PPH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b>Elastomeric Rubber or Self-Adhesive Acoustic Barrier: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a thickness of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masacoustics.com\/product\/barrera-acustica-flat-barrier-5a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 mm and 5 kg\/m\u00b2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masacoustics.com\/product\/barrera-acustica-flat-barrier-10a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 mm thick and 10 kg\/m\u00b2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is installed between the load-bearing structures or wooden battens and the walls, ceiling, or floor\u2014and also under the first layer of gypsum plasterboard or DMF. This improves the overall performance of the new wall. We also use it as an intermediate layer between the first layer of gypsum plasterboard (or DMF) and the second layer of gypsum plasterboard. This reduces the loss of insulation by up to 10 dB at high frequencies (this varies depending on the layers used and the room dimensions). We will see this loss or dip in Figure 5 above, marked as fc or Coincidence Frequency.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b><\/b><\/li><li><b>Biclad Material, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masacoustics.com\/product\/barrera-acustica-flat-barrier-flex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Flat Barrier Flex<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product that combines porous felt as an absorbent material with an elastomeric layer. We use it to reinforce the wall described in the previous sections by adhering it to the original wall before starting. This material is also used on ceilings and floors as acoustic reinforcement and to isolate noise from rainwater or greywater downpipes.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more section from the University of Vigo.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It helps to understand whether we can use single or double walls and the use of dampers.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-310039c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"310039c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a precaution, in the preliminary work we must consider sealing all the cracks and holes in switches\u2014which will now transfer to the new wall\u2014preferably with surface-mounted covers to avoid leaving a large gap in the acoustic insulation.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03167d6 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default gs-locked-section-no\" data-id=\"03167d6\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Execution by qualified operators<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these materials, when properly installed, can provide improved airborne noise insulation between two rooms with reinforced separation. However, it is important to hire qualified technicians to carry out the work, ensuring that everything is properly sealed after the preliminary work<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8b04549 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default gs-locked-section-no\" data-id=\"8b04549\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a20cea7\" data-id=\"a20cea7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4217430 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4217430\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><b>Materials for advanced acoustic isolation<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, not all noise problems\u2014due to their intensity or origin\u2014can be solved with a partial solution on a wall, ceiling, or floor.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in a room dedicated to rehearsals or instrument recording, music production, a restaurant, nightclub, or any other activity that generates high levels of music or noise, a different approach is needed because sound enters or exits through the room\u2019s lateral, upper, and lower sides.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, the presence of an engineer is indispensable; they should conduct a preliminary acoustic measurement to tailor the solution to ensure the objective is met. And, most importantly, a structural architect or qualified technician must ensure that the additional loads on the ceiling or floor will be supported by the building\u2014or that a study is conducted for structural reinforcement.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, we will also use dampers on the ceiling and floor to achieve complete insulation (a \u201croom within a room\u201d):<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b>Ceiling Dampers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install the dampers as specified by an engineer or qualified technician who will indicate the model and exact position of the ceiling dampers using metal plugs and threaded rods. Leave sufficient space to apply, on top of the metallic ceiling structure (TC47), a layer of the two mineral wools described above for the walls, followed by two or three layers of gypsum plasterboard as on the walls, with the Flat Barrier elastomeric rubber between the first and second layers. A safety gap of 3 cm should be left between the new ceiling and the four walls to avoid an acoustic bridge that would ruin the work.
