Acoustic Treatment Studio 2 of Atresmedia “Espejo Público

Project objectives ‘’Espejo Público’’

The audience-leading magazine show hosted by Susana Griso has been on air since late 2006. In February 2025, we were commissioned to carry out a much-needed acoustic improvement, taking advantage of the complete renovation and upgrade of Studio 2. This adds a new project to those we have already completed for Atresmedia (La Voz, El Chiringuito, Pasapalabra, La Ruleta de la Suerte, El objetivo, etc.).

The importance of acoustic control in an Atresmedia television studio

Audiovisual production requires good sound within the studio itself and, of course, also on our televisions. The acoustic treatment of a TV studio must control reverberation, improve intelligibility, and minimize residual noise caused by lights, ventilation, motors, the chatter of professionals working there, etc. In short, it’s about creating sound optimization suitable for any type of content.

Acoustic challenges and solutions implemented in the project “Espejo Público

In the case of Espejo Público, the host spends nearly 5 hours live on air, responding to hundreds of different acoustic cues (guests, collaborators, director, producers, technicians, etc.). On top of these interactions are the previously mentioned noises, some of them constant, such as ventilation and motors, along with the continuous comings and goings of people and equipment.

Acoustic challenges of the “Espejo Público” TV studio

Creating an effective acoustic environment across the entire frequency spectrum, capable of largely absorbing interference while maintaining a high level of clarity and intelligibility both inside and outside the set.

What acoustic solutions have been implemented in Atresmedia studios?

Since we first implemented Insulquilts in Atresmedia studios in 2018, we have gradually been renewing the acoustics of all the studios with this same product. What was previously known as the Insulquilt Quilted Studio Blanket has, since early 2025, been renamed Platinum Blanket-Foil—a name that better describes these impressive acoustic absorbers. Insulquilts has been leading the industry in acoustic treatment for large audiovisual spaces since 1964. The names of studios that acoustically outfit their surfaces are well known worldwide (Warner Bros., Universal Studios, Paramount, Sony, Disney, Babelsberg, Pinewood, Atresmedia, Toboggan, etc.).

At Mas Acoustics, we always recommend the use of Insulquilts—not only for their excellent acoustic performance but also for the safety they provide (fire response), their thermal conductivity, their easy and quick installation, and the extreme longevity of the product—factors that are crucial for the architects who specify it and the clients who purchase our product.

Technical details of the acoustic treatment for “Espejo Público

Initial assessment and diagnosis

Large-scale TV studios usually do not present low-frequency problems. In general, it is easy to anticipate the reverberation time, the intelligibility levels and to check the constant background noise (NC) after acoustic measurements.

Atresmedia’s Studio 2 was not very different from some of the studios we had worked on in previous projects (Studio 1, Studio 4, etc.). It is a TV studio of nearly 500 m² with a height of almost 12 meters and a perimeter catwalk located just over 7 meters high. The ceiling presented numerous obstacles that prevented the use of Insulquilt, such as ventilation ducts, hoist and pantograph supports, lifelines, and so on.

The walls were stripped of their previous acoustic treatment and were left relatively free for the installation of our Insulquilts Platinum Blanket-Foil, although we always encountered obstacles that, once we began the installation, were easy to overcome thanks to the versatility and ease of installation of the product.

The greatest challenge was the wall covering work above the perimeter catwalk, as it was only about 80 cm wide, while the maximum height we needed to reach was 4 meters. It was impossible to access this height using scissor lifts or articulated lifts.

Design and planning of acoustic treatment solutions

As this project is a continuation of the acoustic treatment carried out in previous Atresmedia studios, we can focus this section more on planning, since the success or failure of a project of this scale depends largely on planning and coordination.

We had to calculate the amount of material required, taking into account the capacity of the containers in which the Insulquilts acoustic blankets would travel from the factory, located east of Los Angeles, CA (USA), to the Atresmedia facilities in San Sebastián de los Reyes, Madrid. Therefore, careful attention had to be paid to logistics, including production time, shipping, customs, unloading and storage, lifting equipment, and finally installation, coordinating with other tradespeople who might be working in the studio at the same time. Schedules are usually tight, so thorough planning always ends up being the best guarantee of success in any installation.

Implementation of acoustic treatments in an Atresmedia studio

As we did for Atresmedia in previous studios, in Studio 2 we combined Insulquilt Platinum Blanket-Foil on the walls with Stratocell Whisper acoustic baffles hanging from the ceiling via a grid of tensioned steel cables. This combination ensures optimal acoustics across the entire frequency spectrum, making the studio suitable for any type of content.

On February 10, 2025, we began covering the upper level of the walls with our Insulquilts Platinum Blanket-Foil and then proceeded with the tensioned steel cable grid, with the entire installation taking about 5 days.

Next, we covered the lower part of the air ducts and the narrow stairwell with Insulquilts. Once that was finished, we began covering the lower walls with 8-meter-high Insulquilt blankets and completed the studio by hanging nearly 700 Stratocell Whisper panels measuring 1.2 x 0.6 meters. The entire installation took about 5 weeks, interspersed with the tasks of other tradespeople.

Materials used in the “Espejo Público” studio

  • Walls: Insulquilts: Black Platinum Blanket-Foil.
  • Ceiling: Black Stratocell Whisper, cut into hanging acoustic baffles.

In ceilings where the installation of Insulquilts acoustic blankets is not feasible, we always opt for this combination, as it provides excellent acoustic results across the entire frequency range. We also do this with the guarantees of product longevity and fire response. If you want to learn more about Insulquilts, our products, or our consultancy services, don’t hesitate to contact us.
